Chapter 6

I step into the dragon’s lair, feeling the dampness of the cave seep into my skin. The stalactites hanging from the ceiling are like teeth, ready to bite at any moment. The sulfuric smell fills my nostrils and makes me feel nauseous. But I can’t turn back now.

Nadira follows closely behind me, her eyes scanning the area for any signs of danger. We both know that finding the dragon is crucial to proving our worth as allies to the elf tribe.

“Keep your guard up,” Nadira whispers, gripping her bow tightly.

I nod, feeling a mix of nervousness and determination. We’ve trained for this moment, but facing a dragon is a whole other level.

We move deeper into the cave, our footsteps echoing against the rocky walls. My heart races with each step, wondering if we’re getting closer or walking into a trap.

“Daniel, over there,” Nadira points to a shadowy corner of the cave.

I squint my eyes, trying to make out any shapes in the darkness. And then I see it. A pair of glowing emerald eyes staring back at us.

“Kaelin Emberflame,” I whisper, trying to remain calm.

The dragon lets out a low growl, warning us to stay away. But we can’t back down now.

“Easy there, Kaelin,” I say, holding up my hands in a gesture of peace. “We mean you no harm.”

But the dragon only snarls, baring its sharp teeth.

“Looks like we’ll have to do this the hard way,” Nadira says, pulling out an arrow.

My hand grips the hilt of my sword, ready for whatever comes next. This is it. Our chance to prove ourselves. To show that we’re not just outsiders, but potential allies to the elf tribe.

I take a deep breath, feeling the weight of the moment on my shoulders. We’re in the dragon’s lair now, and it’s up to us to tame the beast.

I take a step forward, my hand still gripping the hilt of my sword. The dragon’s eyes narrow, and I can see the fiery determination in them. This is going to be harder than I thought.

“Easy now,” I say calmly, trying to keep my voice steady. “We’re not here to hurt you.”

But Kaelin doesn’t seem to believe me. With a deafening roar, she lunges forward, her teeth bared and claws extended.

I dodge to the side, narrowly avoiding her attack. Nadira lets out an arrow, but it bounces off of Kaelin’s scales harmlessly.

“Keep trying,” I shout to Nadira, taking another swing at the dragon with my sword.

Kaelin is quick, though, and she dodges my attack effortlessly. She’s young, but she’s fast and strong, and it’s clear that we’re in for a tough fight.

“Come on, Kaelin,” Nadira calls out, drawing her bow again. “We don’t want to hurt you!”

But the dragon only snarls in response, sending a burst of flames our way. I jump back, feeling the heat singe my hair. This is going to be a long battle.

As we continue to fight, I can feel my own frustration mounting. Why won’t Kaelin listen to us? Doesn’t
